Reminder of Vehicle Property Tax Extension in Alabama

Blog, ONESOURCE, ONESOURCE Property Tax May 14, 2014

Most are probably aware of this extension; however, we wanted to remind taxpayers that the Department of Revenue has extended the deadline for vehicle-related property tax payments to the end of this week. County offices were closed due to severe weather conditions that happened on April 28, 2014 and state officials acknowledge that this closing could adversely affect taxpayers’ property tax processes. Therefore, all property tax deadlines for motor vehicle registration, transfer, renewal and property tax payments have been extended through this Friday, May 16, 2014.  Additionally, any taxpayer whose vehicle registration month is April will not be penalized for late registrations or late vehicle property tax payments, as long as processes are completed through May 16.  This extension also applies to owners who have recently bought a motor vehicle but have not yet registered within the mandatory 20-day registration timeframe; such individuals will not be penalized as long as registrations are done through this Friday. Note that this extension also applies to property tax payment deadlines for state-based vehicles registered according to the International Registration Plan; however, it is not extended to IRP vehicle registrations or renewals.
