August Sales & Use Tax Changes

Indirect Tax, ONESOURCE, Sales and Use Tax July 26, 2011

Sales tax holiday season 2011 is upon us! Several states are gearing up for several days of tax-free shopping throughout August, so take notice of publications on your state’s revenue website. Along with the tax holidays we have some other items to note, as well. Those are as follows:

New Levies

Alabama: Semmes 2.5% (rental & standard sales/use); Semmes Police Jurisdiction 1.25% (rental & standard sales/use)
Tennessee: Sweetwater (McMinn County) 0.75%; Sweetwater (Monroe County) 0.5%

Rate Changes

Alabama: Auburn 4.0%; Opelika 4.0%

Sales Tax Holidays

Alabama: August 5th through August 7th 2011 on various purchases of clothing & footwear $100.00 or less per item, computers and software accessories $750.00 or less per item, non-business purchases of books $30.00 or less per item and non-business purchases of school supplies $50.00 or less per item. Please reference the Alabama Department of Revenue website for more information regarding participating jurisdicitions.
Arkansas: August 6th through August 7th 2011 on various purchases of clothing & footwear $99.99 or less per item, clothing accessories $49.99 per item and school supplies with no pricing limit.
Connecticut: August 21st through August 27th 2011 on various purchases of clothing & footwear $299.99 or less per item.
Florida: August 12th through August 14th 2011 on various purchases of clothing & footwear $75.00 or less per item and school supplies $15.00 or less per item.
Iowa: August 5th through August 6th 2011 on various purchases of clothing & footwear $99.99 or less per item.
Louisiana: August 5th through August 6th 2011 on the first $2,500.00 per item of all non-business purchases of tangible personal property. The state tax rate and St. Charles Parish tax rate are the only taxes exempted for this tax holiday.
Maryland: August 12th through August 20th 2011 on various purchases of clothing & footwear $100.00 or less per item.
Missouri: August 5th through August 7th 2011 on various non-business purchases of clothing & footwear $100.00 or less per item, the first $3,500 on non-business purchases of computers, the first $350.00 on non-business purchases of computer software accessories and the first $50.00 of non-business purchases of school supplies. Please reference the Missouri Department of Revenue website for more information regarding participating jurisdictions.
New Mexico: August 5th through August 7th 2011 on various purchases of clothing & footwear $99.99 or less per item, computer $1,000.00 or less per item, computer accessories $500.00 or less per item, and school supplies for $99.99 or less per item or $14.99 or less per item depending on the item of purchase.
North Carolina: August 5th through August 7th 2011 on various non-business purchases of clothing & footwear $100.00 or less per item, non-business purchases of computer $3,500 or less per item, non-business purchases of computer supplies $350.00 or less per item, non-business purchases of school supplies $100.00 or less per item, non-business purchases of school instructional materials $300.00 or less per item and non-business purchases of sports and recreational equipment $50.00 or less per item.
Oklahoma: August 5th through August 7th 2011 on various purchases of clothing & footwear $99.99 or less per item.
South Carolina: August 5th through August 7th 2011 on purchases of clothing & footwear, computers and school supplies up to any price.
Tennessee: August 5th through August 7th 2011 on various non-business purchases of clothing & footwear $100.00 or less per item, non-business purchases of computers $1,500.00 or less per item and non-business purchases of school supplies $100.00 or less per item.
Texas: August 19th through August 21st 2011 on various purchases of clothing & footwear $99.99 or less per item and non-business purchases of school supplies $99.99 or less per item.
Virginia: August 5th through August 7th 2011 on various purchases of clothing & footwear $100.00 or less per item and school supplies $20.00 or less per item.
