NC Governor Favors State Tax Increase

Indirect Tax, ONESOURCE, Sales and Use Tax February 2, 2012

North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue is making a 0.75% tax increase the centerpiece of her 2012 budget.  She claims that the funds will be an investment in the states’ education as the federal stimulus funds are set to run out this year.  Should this tax increase pass, many counties will see their combined tax rate jump from 6.75% to 7.5%, an increase that was rejected by the legislature in a recent session.  The polls suggest that the support for this proposal is very split, with the general public generally favoring it should the funds actually go towards education, and the GOP legislature strongly opposing it.
