Integrating Checkpoint® with UltraTax CS® Puts the Information You Need Right Where You Need It

Timothy D. Evans, CPA, MS Tax, has been a tax and accounting professional since 1981, so he remembers when online information searches were in their infancy. “They were expensive and rudimentary,” says Evans, the tax partner at Vicenti, Lloyd & Stutzman LLP in Glendora, Calif.

Technology has come a long way since then. Evans has been using Thomson Reuters Checkpoint for years, and considers it a great tool for all the primary source materials and expert analysis he needs.

“If I have a tax question, it’s where I turn first,” he says. “With the Intuitive Search function, you just type in a bunch of words and usually get exactly what you are looking for. Having it all be searchable is much easier than the old paper books we used to have. It’s a fast, easy way to get information.”

When you consider that Vicenti, Lloyd & Stutzman handles about 2,000 tax returns a year, it’s easy to imagine how quickly any time savings can add up.

Checkpoint got even better for Evans about two years ago, when the firm began using UltraTax CS. Checkpoint and related services, including RIA Form/Line Finder, can be integrated with UltraTax CS, providing users with instant access to targeted guidance and analysis.

“It’s seamless, because you don’t have to leave UltraTax CS to look up whatever you need to know,” Evans says.

Evans particularly likes being able to go directly to IRS instructions on a given topic, and also uses Line Finder integration, especially for unusual situations he and his team don’t see every day.

“It saves time,” he says, “and because you don’t have to stop and think about where to find what you need, you don’t lose your train of thought.”

For the same reason, Evans is also a fan of Checkpoint’s built-in help and how-to center.

“It keeps the process going in the preparation and you don’t have to stop, so I love that,” Evans says. “There are so many ways to move around and get things done. The way Checkpoint and UltraTax CS work together is terrific—and it’s fast.”

An integrated solution is the reason Vicenti, Lloyd & Stutzman moved to Thomson Reuters products in the first place, starting with Practice CS. They’re now using it for all their main applications, and have even provided input to UltraTax CS developers—a level of collaboration Evans appreciates. Given the firm’s integrated approach, it’s not surprising that Evans highly recommends using UltraTax CS and Checkpoint in tandem.

“Checkpoint and UltraTax CS are superior to anything else I’ve ever seen,” he says. “I can’t think of a situation where I couldn’t find the information I needed in Checkpoint, and it’s very consistent with how the tax law works. Anyone who is using Checkpoint but isn’t using UltraTax CS is really missing out on a lot of flexibility and integration.”
