The IRS supports the current year (2013) and two previous years (2011 and 2012) of returns that are e-filed using the IRS Modernized e-File (MeF) system. MeF is a web-based system that allows e-filing of individual, corporation, partnership, trust, and exempt organization tax returns.
Note: 2012 UltraTax CS was the initial launch for 1040 e-filing using the MeF system. Tax year 2012 e-filed 1040 returns can be e-filed in processing years 2012, 2013, and 2014. 2013 e-filed 1040 returns can be e-filed in processing years 2013, 2014, and 2015. However, tax year 2011 and earlier 1040 returns must be filed on paper. Similarly, because 2013 UltraTax CS is the first year in which MeF is used for Form 1041 e-filing, you cannot e-file 2012 and prior-year Form 1041 returns using UltraTax CS.
The following table details which prior-year returns you can e-file during the 2014 processing year.
|Return Type||Prior Years Accepted Via E-File|
|1065||2012 and 2011|
|1120C, 1120S||2012 and 2011|
|990||2012 and 2011|
|5500||2012, 2011, 2010, 2009*, and 2008*|
* Note: Prior Form 5500 Returns may be e-filed in 2010 UltraTax CS and forward. 2008 and 2009 Form 5500 Returns may be e-filed through the U.S. Department of Labor EFAST website.
