Baltimores Bottle Tax Facing Hurdles

Indirect Tax, ONESOURCE, Sales and Use Tax June 13, 2012

In 2010, Baltimore passed its’ first “bottle tax” by split city council vote, which levied a 2 cent tax on bottled goods.  This tax, which was set to expire in 3 years, now is facing strong opposition from local union and other industry workers in efforts to increase the tax from 2 cents to 5 cents.  The revenue that is to be generated from this tax hike is intended to give a boost to local schools and other construction work, but union leaders claim that this will cost many jobs while not making a significant impact on those schools.
