Cape Girardeau has been faced with the decision of how to compensate for lost revenue in the wake of recent laws regarding the taxation of out of state purchases, such as vehicles and other high end goods. One way of combating this trend is to institute a 1% use tax, which has been the topic of discussion for county commissioners lately. Local laws signed in the past year by the governor have given breath to the possibility of such a tax, but voters would have to approve it before 2016. Several local municipalities in recent months have joined the other 55 across the state that already collect a use tax. As the November deadline to get this proposal on the ballot has passed, April is seeming a more likely scenario.
