State officials are making a push for legislative changes regarding the collection of sales and use taxes from online retailers. The discussion focused on the “Market Place Fairness Act” or H.R. bill 3179. This bill would require online retailers with sales over one million dollars annually to pay sales tax in states in the same fashion as brick and mortar retailers. In the U.S. House Judiciary Committee hearing, on July 24th, advocates for the bill reiterated a familiar argument: While brick-and-mortar retailers have to pay sales taxes, online retailers don’t — and that’s not fair.
