Six cities in Washington County, Iowa, had the opportunity to renew a one percent local option sales tax in November, and all six did so. The existing tax, which has been in effect since 2002, was set to expire June 30th, 2012. Three other cities in Washington County also have local option rates, but do not have a sunset date. Had any of the cities failed to pass the measures, the entire county would be impacted due to the way the state collects the revenue and redistributes it back amongst the cities.
