A Kansas Senator is proposing an early end to the one percent state sales tax increase that went effective July 2010, saying that it has already served its purpose in generating revenue. She believes that doing so would give local government more flexibility with financial decisions. The increase, which raised the state sales tax from 5.3% to 6.3% is scheduled to reduce to 5.7% July 1, 2013, and so far has raised more revenue than initially expected by about $200 million. The Governor is preparing his own budget plans to be announced sometime in 2012.
