Indirect Tax, Sales and Use Tax March 28, 2011

The Budget and Taxation Committee of the Maryland Senate approved a proposal on March 24th to gradually raise the sales tax on alcohol from 6 to 9%. The liquor specific tax increase would eventually raise $85 million for the state. The measure has the backing of Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr. (D-Calvert), but must also win support from the House. SB994 would be effective July 1, 2011.

Senate Bill 994 is available on The General Assembly’s website.
