Massachusetts Mayors Form Massachusetts Main Street Fairness Coalition

Indirect Tax, ONESOURCE, Sales and Use Tax September 25, 2012

There has been a lot of recent news about online retailers, Amazon specifically, beginning to charge sales tax on online purchases within select states.  Massachusetts is not one of those states and a group of Massachusetts governors have developed a coalition, The Massachusetts Main Street Fairness Coalition, to force them to apply sales tax in their state as well. According to the coalition, Amazon has a large enough of a physical presence in Massachusetts where it is liable to collect sales taxes and Amazon currently contests that their presence does not give them nexus in the state. Previously, Amazon has threatened to discontinue its services to consumer’s in other states that have tried to force them to collect sales tax. Recently the coalition has written a letter to Governor Deval Patrick, urging him to aggressively force Amazon into “compliance” before the holiday shopping season begins.
