New York Governor Considers Renewing 2% Utility Tax

Indirect Tax, ONESOURCE, Sales and Use Tax February 14, 2013

Poppy FlowersNew York Governor Andrew Cuomo is considering renewing a 2% utility tax previously imposed by former Governor David Patterson. The tax is imposed on gas, steam, and non-municipal water services. Previously, the utility tax had been scheduled to expire in 2014.

Local businesses are lobbying against renewing the utility tax because they believe that it will hurt their already struggling businesses. Members of the State Senate are also pushing back against Governor Cuomo’s inclusion of the utility tax extension in the proposed budget for the same reasons. Many are claiming that this tax would be a blow to businesses, particularly manufacturing businesses that use large amounts of energy on a day to day basis.
