Amongst a list of suggestions from a citizens committee is the imposition of the very first county sales tax in Oregon. Curry County is one of a dozen counties expected to face a budget shortfall in the near future, and committee members are exploring ways of addressing that. The County Commissioner favors exempting certain necessities from the sales tax such as groceries, prescription medication, and utility payments, as well as tobacco and alcohol, which are already taxed by the state. This issue may be placed on the ballot as early as May, but November is currently the target date.
