Out-of-State Car Sales May Be Taxed In Missouri. Again.

Indirect Tax, ONESOURCE, Sales and Use Tax May 21, 2012

A recent state Supreme Court decision in Missouri ruled that local governments could not levy a sales tax on car purchases made out of state.  However, lawmakers are now in discussions to reinstate this option as a revenue source for local communities.  The Senate has already approved this measure, and the House also recently voted in favor of it.  Under this measure, anyone purchasing a car out-of-state is responsible for state taxes as well as any local taxes that apply to where the purchaser resides.  Despite pushes from lawmakers to just sign it, Governor Nixon is working on a strategy so that the bill does not skip a vote of the people.
