Petersburg has become the 19th organized borough in Alaska, joining 18 others around the state. As a result, the city of Petersburg has officially dissolved, becoming a service area within the now larger Petersburg Borough, and the cities of Kake and Port Alexander shift to part of the larger Unorganized Borough area, which encompasses more than half of Alaska’s land area, and is comprised of areas not within any of the 19 Organized Boroughs. The smallest city in Alaska, Kupreanof, still remains under the classification of the new Petersburg Borough, but will maintain its own local government.
