Small Business Owners Appreciate the Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday

Indirect Tax, ONESOURCE, Sales and Use Tax September 10, 2012

Business was booming at several hunting supply and gun stores throughout Louisiana this weekend. This boom can be largely explained by a sales tax exemption on hunting goods, like shotguns, rifles, ammunition and hunting accessories just before hunting season. Local business owners and managers, like Tara Harris, store director of Academy Sports & Outdoors have given the holiday high praise. “We saw an increase in business starting Friday night. People get off work and are excited about the tax-free event. We’ve had some people shopping with us for the past two weeks just preparing their lists and waiting until today to buy.” The tax holiday also applies to items such as off-road vehicles and all-terrain vehicles that are specially designed for hunting.  Unlike the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday in August, purchases are exempt from both state and local sales tax and not just the 4.0% state sales tax rate.
