City Commissioners Seeking Transparency With Taxing Districts

Indirect Tax, ONESOURCE, Sales and Use Tax, Transaction Tax August 29, 2011

City commissioners in Lawrence, Kansas, have proposed bringing back a policy that would require businesses within the city that are charging a sales tax higher than the standard rate to post a sign in the window alerting customers to this increased rate.  These special taxes can be as much as 2 percent extra on a purchase.  No formal vote has been taken yet, but in the next 4 to 6 weeks commissioners and staff will vote on this policy, along with other topics such as limiting how a business can use the proceeds of the special tax, and adding language to proposals to show the need for the special taxing district.
