Manitoba has made it official! Thursday night, just as the fall sitting of the Legislature was coming to an end, the controversial sales tax increase that went into effect in July was approved officially raising the levy from seven to eight per cent. The increase was part of the government’s budget bill introduced last spring. The bill also suspends a section of the province’s balanced budget law that requires a referendum for any increase to the sales tax. Opposition Leader Brian Pallister has promised to fight the tax increase in court.
