A bill to bring back Massachusetts’ annual sales tax holiday weekend appears on track for advancement. The state has provided a tax exempt weekend in August seven of the past eight years. This year’s bill would exempt taxes for two days, August 11th and 12th, exempting a variety of products from the state’s 6.25% sales tax. Last year, Governor Deval Patrick called the holiday “popular” but not necessarily “prudent.” Nevertheless, he signed the bill August 1st less than two weeks ahead of the tax holiday for the second consecutive year. The nearly annual sales tax holiday began in 2004 but skipped a year in 2009.
