The proposed Sunset Beach de-annexation bill sponsored by North Carolina Senator Rabon has been anything but a smooth, agreeable process so far. Local community leaders, including town Mayor Watts, have already passed their own resolution opposing Senate Bill 875 which aims to de-annex three different sections of land within the town. Each of these three properties have an extensive history of development issues over the years, however, opponents are still surprised and upset with the fact that it has made it to the legislature before being handled locally. Additionally, there is frustration over the possibility of these plots continuing to receive public services but not contributing to property tax if they are removed from the city.
