Form 1040-X Can Now Be Filed Electronically

In a News Release, the IRS has announced that taxpayers will now be able to e-file Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, using commercial tax-filing software. For now, only tax year 2019 Forms 1040 and 1040-SR returns can be amended electronically.

Background. Form 1040-X is used to correct Form 1040, Form 1040-SR, Form 1040A, Form 1040EZ, Form 1040NR, or Form 1040NR-EZ; to make certain elections after the prescribed deadline; to change amounts previously adjusted by the IRS; and to make a claim for a carryback due to a loss or unused credit. Taxpayers can now e-file Form 1040-X. Taxpayers will now be able to amend their Forms 1040 by filing Form 1040-X electronically using commercial tax-filing software. For now, only 2019 Forms 1040 and 1040-SR returns can be amended electronically.

According to the News Release, Form 1040-X is one of the last major individual tax forms that taxpayers couldn’t e-file. About 3 million Forms 1040-X are filed by taxpayers each year.

Taxpayers still have the option to submit a paper version of the Form 1040-X and should follow the instructions for preparing and submitting the paper form.

Taxpayers filing their Form 1040-X electronically or on paper can use the “Where’s My Amended Return?” online tool to check the status of their amended return.
