November 16, 2019 – Thomson Reuters has been named the winner of Bronze Stevie® Awards in the Most Innovative Woman of the Year and Female Executive of the Year categories in the 16th annual Stevie Awards for Women in Business.

The Stevie Awards for Women in Business honor women executives, entrepreneurs, employees, and the companies they run– worldwide.  The Stevie Awards have been hailed as the world’s premier business awards.

Nicknamed the Stevies for the Greek word for “crowned,” the awards were presented to winners last night during a dinner event attended by more than 550 people at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.  The event was broadcast via Livestream.

More than 1,500 entries were submitted this year for consideration in more than 90 categories, including Executive of the Year, Entrepreneur of the Year, Company of the Year, Startup of the Year, Women Helping Women, and Women Run Workplace of the Year.  Thomson Reuters won in the Most Innovative Woman and Female Executive categories for Business Services.

Virginia Lorenzo is the Senior Director, Tax and Accounting Professionals, Checkpoint Catalyst and International Content Lead at Thomson Reuters and the recipient of the Bronze Stevie for Most Innovative Woman of the Year. In her role, she manages an editorial team of 20 people. She holds a JD and LL.M (Tax). After practicing tax law, Lorenzo decided to pursue a career in tax publishing. Her principal areas of expertise are state and federal tax law.

Lorenzo returned to the editorial team in Q4 2019.  From July 2018 until then, Lorenzo was in the role of Checkpoint product owner, where she worked with a cross functional team of tech developers, user experience experts, R&D and Thomson Reuters Center for AI and Cognitive Computing.  The goal of the team was to leverage the power of AI, the deep domain expertise of tax and accounting professionals, plus the vast collection of Checkpoint’s annotated content to create a new, modern user experience for tax and accounting researchers. Lorenzo spent a significant amount of time with customers to identify the pain points, and she took a lead role in mobilizing the teams of subject matter experts to work with the AI/R&D experts. Improved search performance, a simplified UI, and other industry leading features were launched as Checkpoint Edge in June 2019.

Swati Garodia is the Global Head of Products for the Tax & Accounting Professionals business segment within Thomson Reuters won the bronze Stevie award for Female Executive of the Year. Garodia and her team create and deliver customer-led innovation through flagship brands such as Checkpoint, Checkpoint Edge, Checkpoint Learning, CS Professional Suite, and Onvio. These research and workflow products enable over 100,000 customers and millions of users to work more efficiently and effectively and create meaningful connections with their clients.

The accounting industry is ripe for disruption as accountants grapple with an ever-changing regulatory landscape, technology disruption, and the commoditization of compliance work.  Garodia has spearheaded the development of innovative new solutions like Checkpoint Edge and Onvio. These new solutions provide accountants with an efficient pathway to the right answer.

Garodia is also a revered leader and mentor for her team of over 500 employees, which includes more than 200 CPAs. She’s a visionary adept at prioritizing the needs of her team, the business and customers. Her leadership style models confidence, self-awareness, empathy and integrity.  She empowers her team members to be accountable for their deliverables and serves as a coach, sounding board or barrier-remover when needed.  She’s also relentless about developing talent on her team and seeks out new opportunities for her team members to stretch and shine.

“I am so proud of Virginia and Swati on this amazing accomplishment,” said Charlotte Rushton, president, Tax & Accounting Professionals at Thomson Reuters. “At a time when women are pushing boundaries and breaking stereotypes, it is great to see the women of Thomson Reuters being recognized by such as distinguished organization.”

Gold, Silver, and Bronze Stevie Award winners were determined by the average scores of more than 150 business professionals around the world, working on eight juries.

This year’s Stevie Awards for Women in Business was complemented by the Women|Future Conference, a two-day educational and networking event also at the Marriott Marquis Hotel on November 14-15.
