Georgia is considering phasing out their taxes on energy consumption to attract manufacturing businesses into the state. Each county in Georgia will weigh in on whether or not to charge manufacturers a two percent excise tax on energy they currently apply. This is in response to a new law that exempts manufacturers from paying a local sales tax on energy. The exemption will be phased in over four years starting in January. The new law recognized that some localities can’t afford to forgo these tax revenues and allows local tax authorities to implement a local excise taxes to replace this lost tax revenue.
