Navajo Nation – Junk Food Tax on The Agenda

Indirect Tax, ONESOURCE, Sales and Use Tax January 29, 2014

1119_twinkies-pileA proposal to enact an additional 2 percent sales tax on junk food purchased on the Navajo Nation could be decided by the Council as early as this week. Soft drinks and packaged snack foods such as potato chips and Twinkies would be considered junk food under the proposal.

Proponents say the bill would help curb health problems. Another proposed bill (Legislation No. 0290-13) aiming to promote healthy eating would eliminate the sales tax on fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, water, nuts, seeds and nut butters.
