South Dakota Voters Oppose Increasing State Sales Tax

ONESOURCE, Sales and Use Tax September 26, 2011

A recent survey shows that the proposal to increase South Dakota’s sales tax from 4 percent to 5 percent has a long ways to go in order to gain voter approval.  Democrats, Republicans, and by an even wider margin, Independents, all oppose the one-cent tax increase.  In order to get this on the November 2012 ballot, a group advocating the increase needs 16,000 signatures by the end of October.  Education and Medicaid would be the primary beneficiaries if this were to pass.
