During the January 4 IRS payroll industry call, the IRS announced that the 1099 filing platform, the Information Return Intake System (IRIS), will open the 2024 filing season at 9am ET, on January 10, 2024, for the taxpayer portal intake method as well as the Application to Application (A2A) method.

IRIS system.

The Information Returns Intake System (IRIS) Taxpayer Portal is a system that provides a no cost online method for taxpayers to electronically file Form 1099 series and print Forms 1099 suitable to be distributed to recipients (see Payroll Guide ¶4342). IRIS was launched in January 2023.

Reduced electronic filing threshold.

The e-filing threshold is reduced beginning with the 2024 filing year (2023 tax year). Taxpayers who file 10 or more information returns in total must file electronically.

Deadline.

Forms 1099 must be filed with the IRS by January 31, 2024.
