Massachusetts Eyeing a Sales Tax Holiday on Food in March

Indirect Tax, Sales and Use Tax February 18, 2011

Legislation has been proposed in both the Massachusetts Senate and House which would enact a sales tax holiday for prepared food occurring from 20 March 2011 to the 26 March 2011, which has historically been a slow week for restaurant sales.

The sales tax holiday would exempt the purchase of prepared food from the state’s 6.25 percent meals tax, though the 0.75 percent sales tax imposed by some Massachusetts locals would be unaffected by the passage of this legislation.

We will continue to follow this legislation and keep you posted on the outcome.
