What’s supposed to happen: Your tax engine calculates the rate at checkout. That calculation feeds into downstream systems for invoicing and compliance.

Where it goes wrong: The tax calculation itself is accurate, but the data doesn’t include everything downstream systems need.

  • Maybe it’s missing fields required for e-invoicing clearance.
  • Maybe the line-item structure doesn’t match what your compliance system expects.
  • Maybe promotional discounts are recorded in a way that creates reconciliation problems later.

Why it matters: Errors at the calculation stage flow through every subsequent stage of the lifecycle. By the time you’re preparing returns, you’re untangling the consequences a calculation error made earlier.

  • E-invoicing compliance: Can your tax calculation content be leveraged by your e-invoicing platform for compliant submissions? Or does someone need to reformat data before transmission?
  • VAT return preparation: Do your e-invoicing records and VAT return data reconcile automatically? Or does someone spend hours each period tracking down discrepancies?
  • Audit readiness: If an auditor asked for documentation today, could you produce it without pulling data from multiple systems and assembling it manually?

If you answered “someone needs to” or “it takes hours” to any of these, it’s worth reassessing the connections within your transaction lifecycle.

What comes next for retailers

The retailers who are best positioned for the next wave of compliance complexity aren’t the ones rushing to add new tools for each requirement, including France’s 2026 e-invoicing mandate, Germany’s in 2027, and the EU’s ViDA framework by 2030.

They’re the ones whose lifecycle is already connected. New mandates get configured instead of added on at the last moment.
