2018 Emerging Partner Workshops

Participants will have the opportunity to earn up to 12.5 CPE credits.

The Emerging Partner: The Emerging Partner is a relatively new partner in an established firm, or one who has recently started or relaunched an accounting firm. The Emerging Partner is not satisfied with merely working in their traditional business but is actively working on new ways to grow their business.

Firm Goals: You’re running your business for a reason — what outcomes are you looking to achieve? In this session, we’ll examine those goals and work through the challenges that prevent you from reaching them.

Income Statement: We’ll evaluate top line and passive income, both of which are needed to drive your business forward. This session will also initiate discussion about dealing with fixed overhead and planning for growth of human capital.

Balance Sheet: We’ll analyze your firm’s assets and liabilities from a new perspective and explore planning for equity growth and investment.

Executing on Your Plan: In the final session, you’ll evaluate the monetary blueprint you’ve created over the past two days and prioritize your actions. You’ll also set short and mid-range goals, based on your custom plan.

For almost 20 years, Paul Miller has been building his firm with a focus on meeting client needs beyond compliance work, and with a business consultancy mindset.

When he became self-employed in 1993, Paul discovered that resources for tax planning, business structure/entity optimization, and overall business coaching were difficult to find. After founding Business By Design in Edina, Minnesota, his goal was to help other entrepreneurs and small businesses be more tax-efficient and make smarter business decisions, in addition to providing traditional accounting firm services.

Today, Paul has developed a firm that provides high-margin business coaching, tax planning, and asset protection services for small businesses, employing many of the same tax planning strategies that larger firms offer. This creates a trusted advisor relationship with his clients, builds multiple income streams for his firm, and establishes the firm’s unique value proposition. Whether it’s tax savings, business transition guidance, or equity building strategies, clients see the value Business by Design delivers — thereby virtually eliminating the client fee pressure situations many accounting firms find themselves in today.

The firm employs a unique “team” approach with a highly trained, diverse staff, including accountants, CPAs, enrolled agents, para-legal, and administrative staff, paired with Paul’s own entrepreneurial expertise to provide high-level, results-oriented services to clients. Paul’s focus on progressive use of technology to drive firm efficiency and better serve clients, coupled with his consultative approach to helping business clients, has positioned Business by Design as a firm of the future.


Emily Postinger

Senior Project Manager, Training and Consulting Services

A senior project manager with the Training, Consulting, and Implementation Services team, Emily is passionate about bringing positive change to firms and strives to deliver a seamless and positive client experience that contributes to firm success.

Emily joined Thomson Reuters in 2010 as a product support representative for UltraTax CS and Planner CS. In 2013, she joined the Training, Consulting, and Implementation Services team as a sales and training consultant. In that role, she presented onsite and web-based technical demonstrations of CS Professional Suite and worked with firms to ensure that the tools improve their workflow. She currently focuses on the business model consulting offering, Practice Forward. Emily has presented at Thomson Reuters SYNERGY Users' Conference and at various professional events, including Partner Summit, trade shows, and sales seminars.

Emily holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting from Eastern Michigan University.


Will Hill

Manager, Training and Consulting Services

Will Hill joined Thomson Reuters in 2001 and serves as manager of delivery on the Training, Consulting, and Implementation Services team. He oversees content development, which includes refining the strategy of client involvement to improve the client experience during implementation and continuing staff education. His varied background with firms of all sizes and specialties provides a solid foundation for business process-oriented training and consulting. In 2006, he was recognized as the CSM Implementation Specialist of the Year — and during the past four years, he’s developed eight different educational classes and consulting offerings. Will holds a master’s degree in business administration from Baker College with a concentration in leadership studies, and a bachelor’s degree from Alma College with majors in business administration and economics.
